The Agitators came to rise in Dallas during the early 90’s. Clint Phillips, the band’s drummer would come into the Direct Hit store and hang out with his crony Roger, who was the guitar player for the Agitators. Since I was just starting off the label, Clint was a perfect partner to team up with, for the Agitators first 7” release and Direct Hits second. Clint had a determination that totally drove the band, always making fliers and artwork for upcoming gigs, shamelessly promoting the band, and all with an endless DIY ethic. The straight up 1-2-3-4 punk rock was perfect for a 7” slab of wax, so the ¼” reel was sent off for pressing. The Agitators would be the first colored vinyl release on Direct Hit. When the sweet slabs were received at the store, we all were all like kids with a new toy. We had a record stuffing “party” at the store, where we set up an assembly line and hand numbered the release, then stuffed the record with fliers, stickers and junk. This was a family project and our baby was now ready to venture out into the world.
Later on in the year, I was out in San Francisco, and I visited Amoeba – and Lo’ & Behold, fanning through the A’s, what was I to stammer across, but the sweet punk rock of the Agitators. Our baby had made it to the big bay area punk rock mecca. Somebody give me a hallelujah …
