William Garcia, the bass player for Chain Link Fence is a story all on his own, which I’ll address later. I stumbled onto CLF when a customer in the store, who was in from Seattle for the holidays, coaxed me over to Bar of Soap. Side bar here, this guy (who was in some band which I’ve forgotten-- but he did find his record in the store) was one eye short, apparently when he was 4, he was running around the family coffee table and fell on the corner. The reason I mention this is that this had a profound effect on me. After my kids were born, I removed my coffee table. OK, back to CLF, I walk in, and how can I describe it … the singer reminded me of Joe Cocker, the bass was jazzed mixed with thump, and dripping on top was this syrupy melodramatic guitar line. It worked. I loved these guys. With the CLF 7” project underway, William became a regular at the store. Another side bar and my favorite William story … Burning man (all the peace loving art hippies groovin around the fire on a cold desert night), meanwhile William all liquored up wandering around with his megaphone spewing his punk rock anger until finally a hippie jumped up out of his stoned haze, sending William into the fire pit. William ended up with some 3rd degree burns, but that did not halt him from going out on a date with his megaphone the following night plaguing the desert landscape. God Bless Punk Rock.
