David Downham, David Dworanczyk and Nicholas Kessler formed The Secession Movement in 1997 in the wake of their former band A Roger 7. Day joined in late 1998 after original 2nd guitarist Matt Hojnowski left to explore other musical pursuits; The band name came from the notion of a separate North and South Jersey, "The original full name was the South Jersey Secession Movement, now the shortened version exists as a sort of philosophical tease in some ways and as a stamp of rebellion in others," says Downham.
With this duality in mind, the band attends to their music with the same philosophy. After their inception, the Secession Movement released three critically acclaimed EP's in successive years. The first EP, "The Primary Colors of..." put the band on the map, among their fans and critics including a feature in the Futures section of CMJ New Music Monthly.
